Back to normal
People have stopped saying “Hi!”
and “Hullo!” and “Lovely Day!”
Strangers greeting each other, leisurely walking
or pedalling on bikes during lock-down.
We are returning to normal, a silent look on our faces
as we pass without speaking, back to where we belong,
solitary beings alone in a crowd,
hurrying past on the streets.
The old isolation has started again,
re-shaping our lives. We are counting ourselves
instead of each other,
scurrying past on our way
to wherever we go,
ignoring those strangers who were our friends for a while.
